Police say that the charge sheet will be revised due to the new fines imposed over traffic violations.

A cabinet decision was made recently, to increase the fine for 5 traffic violations up to 25,000 rupees.

Accordingly, it was decided that a minimum fine of 25,000 rupees would be imposed over several offenses including driving without a valid driving license, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, access of vehicle in to a railway track unsafely and driving a vehicle without a valid insurance cover.

Further, the fine imposed on speeding varies according to the violation of the speed limit.

The minimum fine imposed on the offense of overtaking from the left, and allowing a minor to drive was increased to 2500 rupees.

Accordingly, driving while using mobile phones, would result in a spot fine.

The police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara noted that due to the revision of fines, the charge sheet will also be revised accordingly.

Meanwhile, deputy minister of transport Ashok Abeysinghe noted that the revised fines on traffic violations will be imposed next week onwards.
