The Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition & Indigenous Medicine, Janaka Sugathadasa has made an announcement regarding certain news items on handing over of Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital to the Government.

The announcement is as follows:

"Attention of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine has drawn to certain news items in both the print and electronic media on the handing over of Neville Fernando Teaching Hospital to the Government.

Ministry of Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine wishes to place on record that the Management and Operations of the above Hospital was taken over by the Government on August 01st, 2017 based on a decision taken by the Cabinet of Ministers.

The changeover of the Management of the above Hospital was effected pending the enactment of a new Act to that effect.

To facilitate this process, a tri-party Letter of Intent was signed among the Ministry, Management of South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) and the Bank of Ceylon.

A more detailed agreement than the Letter of intent already signed involving three parties connected to the above property is currently being worked out by the Attorney General l's Department.

As the three parties concerned came to an understanding on the issue, it was decided to take over the Hospital on August 01st ,2O17 by way of entering into the above 'Letter of Intent' signed by representatives of the parties concerned.

The formal legal instrument to this effect will soon be signed once the agreement currently being drafted by the Attorney General is finalized."
