Minister of Finance and Media, Mangala Samaraweera says the existing opposition to the government is a creation to hide large scale corruption took place during the time of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Issuing a statement, Samaraweera said that the government and the judiciary have taken into their custody assets worth over 30 million dollars acquired by Rajapaksa's family members and his close relatives.

The minister of Finance and Media said the sentiments raised by the former president over the lease of Hambantota Port to a Chinese firm are questionable.

He said the former president seems to have forgotten that he had leased a terminal inside the Colombo Port on a 85:15 basis to a Chinese firm.

Samaraweera said the Hambantota Port has been incurring huge losses and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority is paying Rs. 9bn so far and it would rise to Rs. 17.3bn by 2019.

He also revealed most of the international sovereign bonds issued by the previous government to raise funds will mature by 2019 and Sri Lanka will have to repay debts amounting to 4.2 billion dollars in that year.
