President clarifies story behind National Economic Council

President Maithripala Sirisena says he has decided to set up a National Economic Council to streamline the management of the country's economy.

He said the objectives of NEC is to increase the country's export income by developing the local industries.

He expressed these views speaking at the annual Planning Award Ceremony of the Ceylon National Chamber of Industries, in Colombo.

The president said the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, local and international economic specialists have also recommended to set up this advisory council.

President Sirisena had emphasized that the government will not sign any free trade agreement that will affect the local industries and entrepreneurs negatively.

He said some groups that are not related to the business sector are instilling fear amongst business community by spreading false information.
