Health ministry to introduce a tax on added sugar of soft drinks

Health Ministry has decided to impose a new tax based on the additional sugar content of soft drink varieties.

According to World Health Organization's standards, the maximum sugar content in 100ml of a soft drink is 6g.

The health ministry plans to tax one rupee for each gram of added sugar in soft drinks, sold in the market.

Speaking to us, minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne said he will submit a proposal to the cabinet to introduce the proposed tax.
