Erik Solheim, Norwegian peace mediator in the 30-year-long Sri Lankan civil war said that he regrets the fact that he was unable to spend more time with LTTE Leader V. Prabhakaran.

In an interview with Indian media, Solheim said that if he had spent more time with Prabhakaran, he would probably have been able to influence him more.

Erik Solheim said that many western countries had limited knowledge about other parts of the world and therefore had sometimes sympathized with the LTTE.

He also said that he regrets that they didn’t succeed in the peace process and if so, tens of thousands of people, who are now dead, would have been alive.

He said that many young soldiers from southern Sri Lankan villages also lost their lives.

Solheim said that Sri Lanka was like a second home to him and he would love to renew friendships.
