Debate on second reading of Local Government Election Draft Bill commenced in parliament this morning (24).

At the start of the session, the speaker told the House that the Draft Bill will be taken up for debate today and a vote will be taken on 6th of September.

However, Joint Opposition MP Dinesh Gunawardena said that the Opposition needs more time to study the Bill as the government has added 50 amendments to the original draft.

Meanwhile, former Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe who was sacked from his ministerial portfolios yesterday (23) has been assigned the seat number 93 in the House.

Earlier, he occupied the seat number 34.

Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe is the Prime Minister's nominee for the Constitutional Council and he is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Constitutional Assembly.

There's no possibility of removing him from those positions, if he decides not to resign.
