In the US, health officials revealed plans to make cigarette manufacturer's lower nicotine levels to help "protect kids".

Focusing on vulnerable smokers, poverty-stricken women and those with mental health issues, they found lower nicotine levels does reduce the addiction potential of cigarettes.

Their findings added to evidence that "in relatively healthy and socially stable smokers...reducing nicotine content of cigarettes reduces their attractiveness".

Professor Stephen Higgins, who led the study, said: "This study provides a very encouraging indication that reducing the nicotine content of cigarettes would help vulnerable populations.
