Brigadier accused of ordering Rathupaswela shooting, given bail

Brigadier Aruna Deshapriya Gunawardena who is accused of ordering to open fire on the Rathupaswela protestors was released on bail today (31). 

Another Sri Lanka Army Sergeant was also given bail. Brig. Gunawardena was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department in May this year.

The duo were given bail by High Court Judge Priyantha Fernando today.

The Brigadier was released on a cash bail of 100,000 rupees and two personal sureties of 3 million rupees each. The Army Sergeant was released on a 50,000 rupees cash bail and two personal sureties of 2 million rupees each.

The suspects were also banned from overseas travel and they were also ordered to report to the CID on the last Sunday of every month.

Three persons including a school student was killed and 33 persons were injured in the shooting in Weliweriya on the 1st of August, 2013.

4 suspects including the brigadier were arrested in connection with the shooting incident. Two of the four were not produced before Court today.
