A farmer, whose big onion crop was destroyed due to the prevailing wet weather, has committed suicide, consuming poison in Dambulla.

This was revealed at an inquest held at the Dambulla Hospital today (13).

The relatives said that the 57-year-old farmer had cultivated big onions in 2 1/2 acres, but the crop was destroyed due to prevailing heavy rains.

His wife said that he would have consumed poison fearing that he would unable repay the loans obtained for cultivation purposes.
