The South Korean and Japanese governments say that North Korea has fired a missile over northern Japan.

South Korea's military said that the missile is likely to have reached an altitude of about 770 km and travelled some 3,700 km.

The missile flew over Japan's Hokkaido Island before landing in the Pacific Ocean.

Japan's PM Shinzo Abe said his country would "never tolerate" North Korea's dangerous actions.

"If North Korea continues to walk down this path, it has no bright future," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson also condemned the launch, which contravened UN sanctions.

He put the burden of response on China and Russia, nuclear-armed North Korea's main economic partners.

Minutes after the launch, South Korea fired two ballistic missiles into the sea in a simulated strike on North Korea.

President Moon Jae-in held an emergency meeting of his national security council and warned the test would mean further diplomatic and economic isolation for North Korea.
