In a tragic incident reported from Hingurakgoda, Polonnaruwa, a heart patient died while he was transferring to another hospital.

The Public Health Officer (Administration) of the Hingurakgoda MOH office, M. G. Sunil Karunaratne died without any treatment in this incident.

His wife had taken him to the Hingurakgoda Hospital at around 3.30am yesterday, in a three-wheeler, as he had complained of a heart pain.

However, at that moment, the Hingurakgoda Hospital was experiencing a power failure.

Then the in-house doctor had advised her to take Karunaratne to the Polonnaruwa General Hospital, which was 18km away, as he was not in a position to do relevant medical tests.

As she had no alternative, she had taken his husband in a three-wheeler to the Polonnaruwa Hospital and in the middle of their journey, the patient was transferred to a car, in an attempt to reach the hospital as quickly as possible.

However, 56-year-old Karunaratne was already dead by the time the vehicle reached the Polonnaruwa Hospital.

Although there was a generator at the Hingurakgoda Hospital, at that moment, it was not functioning due to a technical failure.

When contacted by our correspondent, the District Medical Officer of the Hingurakgoda Hospital, Dr. Jagath Wimalaratne had said they were unable to rectify the power outage at the hospital, due to the ongoing strike by the CEB workers.
