The Government has decided once again to suspend the enrolment of students for the Medical degree at the SAITM.

This was according to the recommendations made by the committee appointed to look in to the SAITM issue.

The committee led by Deputy Minister Harsha De Silva had recommended that enrolment of new students to be suspended until the minimum standards are gazette.

The relevant gazette will be issued by end December this year.

GMC’s clarification on SAITM

Meanwhile, Hiru sought a clarification from the General Medical Council, UK as to why they had decided to add the SAITM to its list of ‘qualifications which are not acceptable’ in the UK.

Responding our e-mail, Natalia Kannas of the GMC said it was because that the Sri Lanka Medical Council still does not regard graduates of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine as eligible for provisional registration in Sri Lanka.

She added, therefore the GMC is not able to accept them either.

Anti-SAITM protest

Meanwhile, Heavy traffic was reported when roads were blocked in and around Colombo Town Hall yesterday (15) due to a protest rally organized by anti-SAITM movements.

Five motorcades reached Colombo along the Galle Road, Kandy Road, Negombo Road, High Level Road and Horana Colombo road before the rally began.
