The Government Medical Officers’ Association and Inter University Students’ Federation oppose the decision taken by the Government to temporarily suspend the enrolment of students to SAITM.

They allege that the Committee appointed by the government to look into the SAITM issue was only giving temporary solutions.

The Committee headed by Deputy Minister Harsha de Silva had recommended that until the minimum standards for medical education are gazette, the enrolment of new students should be suspended.

The particular gazette will be issued later this year.

The Media Spokesperson of the GMOA, Dr. Samantha Ananda said that in order to address the SAITM issue, the recommendations made by Faculty Heads of Universities should be implemented.

Meanwhile, Hiru sought a clarification from the General Medical Council, UK as to why they had decided to add the SAITM to its list of ‘qualifications which are not acceptable’ in the UK.

Responding our e-mail, Natalia Kannas of the GMC said it was because that the Sri Lanka Medical Council still does not regard graduates of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine as eligible for provisional registration in Sri Lanka.

She added, therefore the GMC is not able to accept them either.
