CEB strike continues, Ministry to recruit new staff

The strike launched by the trade unions attached to the Ceylon Electricity Board are continuing their strike.

Today (19) is the 7th consecutive day since the work stoppage.

Meanwhile, the residents in Minneriya staged a protest demanding the CEB to restore power breakdowns in two villages in the area.

The CEB trade unions stated that the discussion they had with the Labour Minister yesterday (18), ended without a solution being found.

The Convener of the Trade Union Federation, Ranjan Jayalal told our news team that the strike will continue until their demands are met.

He said authorities are not interested to end this dispute in an amicable manner.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy has decided to recruit new staff to the CEB to ensure essential services are run uninterruptedly.

A spokesman from the Ministry told our news team that interviews for new recruitments will begin tomorrow.

Meanwhile, residents in Minneriya, Rotawewa and Samagipura staged protests demanding the CEB to restore power breakdowns in their villages.

The protestors had also interrupted traffic on the Polonnaruwa-Habarana.

However, CEB stated that it has deployed contract workers and takes every possible measure to restore power breakdowns.
