Railway unions seek written assurance to suspend strike action

Several trade unions attached to Sri Lanka Railways say that they would launch a 48-hour token strike from midnight tonight (20).

The Train Operation Supervisory Officers’ Trade Union Alliance said that they have put forward several demands including to rectify their salary anomalies.

Although the Trade Union Alliance had a discussion with the National Salaries and Cadre Commission's chairman yesterday (19), the outcome was unsuccessful.

However, during a media briefing held in Colombo, the convener of the Alliance, Lal Ariyarathna said that they would give up the trade union action, if the Prime Minister or the Presidential Secretary would give them a written response to their demands within today.
