Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told in Parliament today (20) that elections for Sabaragamuwa, North Central and Eastern Provincial Councils will be held before end of next March.

He said this joining the debate on the second reading of the Provincial Council Amendment Draft Bill.

Before the debate was started, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said there is no need to present the Bill for approval of the Provincial Councils.

He said the Attorney General has informed it in writing.

However, the Speaker in the evening, quoting the AG said that the bill needs to be passed with a 2/3rd majority.

A tense situation erupted in Parliament this morning when the bill was presented.

The Speaker adjourned the House and convened a party leaders' meeting.

Meanwhile, our correspondent stated that female Ministers and MPs of the ruling party displayed placard inside the chamber asking 25% representation for women.

They displayed placards that stated “Are you afraid of us?”
