Former Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and former Director General of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission, Anusha Palpita were released on bail today (20).

The Colombo High Court Judge, Gihan Kulatunga who considered the bail applications, released them for Rs. 100,000 cash bail each and 3 personal sureties of Rs. 1 million each.

The High Court Judge also ordered them to handover their passports to the court.

Lalith Weeratunga and Anusha Palpita were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment of 3 years each after they were found guilty of misappropriating Rs. 600 million from the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission to distribute ‘Sil clothes’ during the previous presidential election.

However, lawyers representing Weeratunga and Palpita filed petitions with the Court of Appeal on September 11th, requesting the courts to declare the High Court judgment null and void and acquit them from all charges.

They were granted bail based on that appeal.
