The Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils says that it does not hope to extend the tenure of office of Provincial Councils, which is scheduled to end soon.

Accordingly, the power of administration for Sabaragamuwa, North-Central and the Eastern Provincial councils will be vested with the Governors until elections are held.

The term of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council ends on 27th this month,   while the North-Central Provincial Council’s term ends on 30th this month.

In the 20th amendment, which was presented in parliament recently it had been proposed that powers of provincial councils be vested with the Parliament until the elections were held.

It had also been proposed in the amendment, that the election of all Provincial Councils be held on the same day and to vest with Parliament the power of extending their term.

However, the Supreme Court has informed the Parliament that the relevant draft amendment bill needs to be approved by a 2/3rd majority and a referendum.
