The Sri Lanka Medical Council has decided to boycott today’s meeting scheduled to take place with the Committee headed by Dr. Harsha de Silva, which was appointed to look into the SAITM issue.

A senior official of the SLMC stated that the Harsha de Silva Committee Report has included certain matters that the SLMC did not agree with.

He said their concerns were conveyed during a meeting they had on 6th of September. In protest of that move, SLMC has decided to boycott today’s meeting.

The senior official also said that the SLMC sent several recommendations in writing to the Committee, to be considered.

SLMC recommends:

* New enrolments to SAITM be stopped

* Not to share ‘minimum standards of medical profession’ with other bodies

* Not to interfere with SLMC affairs relating to its authority on standards of foreign or other higher education institutes

The officials from the Attorney General’s Department, the Higher Education Ministry, Health Ministry and University Grants Commission are scheduled to attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Harsha de Silva told our news team that the SLMC has written to him about their decision.

He said that it was the SLMC that had requested the meeting.
