Central Province Governor Niluka Ekanayaka has begun a special investigation looking into a case involving 250 schoolchildren for an attempted Guinness record.

The school children had been used to hold the sari fall.

Reports say that provincial education officers including the school principal have been summoned for the investigation.

Earlier, the Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam  also called for a report.

The Education Minister has stated that although the attempt to set a world record would have brought honour to the country and is praiseworthy, any activities that hinder schoolchildren’s education could not be approved.

Meanwhile the National Child Protection Authority also launched an investigation.

Approximately 250 primary schoolgirls from Sarath Ekanayake Primary School  in Alawathugoda in Kandy were assigned to participate in the event that was shared extensively on social media.

Sarath Ekanayake who holds the post of both Central Province Chief Minister and Education Minister had also participated in the occasion.
