The Supreme Court is scheduled to consider the petition filed by Galle District UPFA MP Geetha Kumarasinghe today (25).

The petition has challenged the Appeal Court verdict given stating  that she cannot hold a parliamentary seat, since she is a dual citizen.

A five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Priyasad Dep is scheduled to consider the petition.

Geetha Kumarasinghe, was elected to parliament after contesting at the general election on 17th August 2016, representing the UPFA in the Galle District.

Subsequently, six Galle District registered voters filed a petition before the Appeal Court, challenging her parliamentary seat on the grounds of her dual citizenship.

The Appeal Court examined the petition and decided that she could not in fact hold a parliamentary seat as she did hold dual citizenship.

Kumarasinghe then filed an appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the verdict.
