The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress says that it would not agree to hand over power to the respective Governors, once the official term of the provincial councils is concluded.

The official term of the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and the Eastern Provincial Councils will end next week.

Under the powers vested in the new Provincial Council Elections Amendment Bill which was passed in parliament recently, fresh elections for these provincial councils will be held after the delimitation process is over.

Although the Government announced that Provincial Council elections will be conducted before next March, opposition parties believe that those elections will be delayed further.

As a result, the SLMC has disagreed to hand over power of these Provincial Councils to the respective Governors.

However, under the 13th amendment, once the term is over, the Governor gets the powers to run the provincial council.

The party also stated that provisions should be passed to facilitate Chief Ministers and the Provincial Ministers assigning power until the elections are held.

Meanwhile, a SLMC spokesperson told our news team that a meeting has been scheduled for today (25) to discuss the proposals they have made with regard to this issue.
