Police say around 30 Myanmar nationals who were taken into police custody in Mount Lavinia today (26) to ensure the security of the group were sent to a camp in Boossa, Galle.

Police Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekera said that they were taken into their custody after a group of monks prepared to stage a demonstration in Mount Lavinia.

The refugees were apprehended in Kankesanthurai recently and later they were handed over to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees office in Colombo.

The Police Media Spokesperson also said that the refugee group was detained at the Mirihana camp and was transported to a rented house in Mt. Lavinia again this morning.

A tense situation erupted as a group of demonstrators including several monks objected police for giving refuge to this group of Myanmar people in Mt. Lavinia.

Later riot police were also called to the scene.

The demonstration was called off when police took the refugees to their custody again.

Heavy traffic jams were reported along Galle Road due to this incident this evening.
