A group of medical specialists at the Kandy Teaching Hospital’s Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Unit has conducted the second successful heart transplant to be conducted in Sri Lanka.

The operation, which was started at around 8pm yesterday (26), concluded at 5am today.

The recipient of the heart was 19-year-old, Sachini Sewwandhi, a resident of Kaluwa Modera, Aluthgama.

The Director of Kandy Teaching Hospital, Dr. Samantha Ratnayake said Sewwandhi's heart was functioning only 10% when specialists decided to conduct a heart transplant.

The group of doctors, led by Heart Specialist Dr. Anil Abeywickrema, conducted the surgery.

Dr. Ratnayake said it was the same group who conducted the country’s first ever heart transplant, two months ago, took part in this transplant operation also.

Sewwandhi’s father, Chaminda Mahesh Kumara, who is a driver by profession said his eldest daughter died 7 years ago due to a heart ailment.

According to him, Sewwandhi has been suffering from a heart ailment for the last six years and they did their utmost to secure her life.

Then they have decided to meet Dr. Ratnayake at the Kandy Teaching Hospital and he had referred Sewwandi to Heart Specialist, Dr. Anil Abeywickrema.

Sewwandhi’s mother, Priyanka Nilmini said she stayed at the hospital with her daughter since March this year, hoping that doctors would help them save their child.

She also expressed their gratitude to the parents of the youth who died at the hospital, for agreeing to donate the heart of the youth to be transplanted to Sewwandhi.

She is now kept at the ICU with close medical attention, the Director of the Kandy Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ratnayake said.

The donor was Nalinda Sakalasuriya, who had died in a road accident, at Haragama on 21st of this month.

His father told us, most of the organs of Nalinda were donated to be transplanted.
