UN Refugee Agency alarmed at Mt. Lavinia incident

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees says they are alarmed and concerned by the incident, which took place recently at a refugee shelter, housing mostly women and children in Mt. Lavinia.

Issuing a communiqué, the UNHCR expressed its concern over the matter.

It was noted that most of those housed at the refugee shelter are Myanmar nationals who were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy from Sri Lankan waters in April this year.

The refugees were eventually brought to safety by the authorities and the UNHCR had expressed its gratitude for the support and protection extended to them.

However, the UNHCR noted that it is equally concerned about the safety and security of its staff providing humanitarian assistance to refugees in Sri Lanka.

They further noted that refugees are victims of violence and international protection should be extended to them and that the Government of Sri Lanka has authorized the housing of refugees in the country.

On 26th of September, a group comprising of Buddhist monks protested against the housing of Myanmar refugees at the shelter in Mt. Lavinia, who was under police protection.

Following a second protest by Buddhist monks that evening, the Myanmar refugees were taken under police protection and transferred to the Boossa detention camp.
