A special discussion was held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena regarding the prices of the essential food items at the Presidential Secretariat, yesterday (Sep. 27).

During this meeting, it was revealed that the traders in the private sector fix the prices in order to keep huge profit when importing rice into the country.

The President instructed the Minister Rishad Bathiudeen to hold a discussion with the relevant parties and urge them to reduce the prices of rice.

Here it was also decided to consider imposing maximum retail prices for rice.

Accordingly, it was decided to fix the maximum prices of Nadu at Rs. 74, local Samba at Rs. 85, and white Kekulu at Rs. 65.

It has also decided to sell coconuts at Rs. 65 each and 1.5mn coconuts will be issued to the market to control the rising prices.

The Government has also decided to impose controlled prices for big onions and potatoes if traders do not take steps to reduce prices.
