The acting IGP C. D. Wickramaratne has handed over the investigations relating to the last Tuesday’s incident in Mount Lavinia, to the Colombo Crime Division.

In this incident, a group, which included Buddhist monks protested close to the place where a group of Myanmar refugees are given shelter by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees' Colombo Office.

Police said that a court order has been obtained to collect un-edited footage of the incident from the media organizations.

Later in the evening, police escorted the refugee group to a detention centre in Boossa.

Even the UNHRC Office issued a statement yesterday (27) and raised concerns about the safety of the group.

“UNHCR emphasizes that refugees need international protection and assistance. UNHCR urges the public and all those concerned with refugees to continue extending protection and to show empathy for civilians fleeing persecution and violence”, the statement added.

This Rohingya group had fled Myanmar in 2012 and lived in India as refugees for nearly five years before trying to migrate illegally to Sri Lanka, with the help of Indian traffickers.

Then they were apprehended by Sri Lanka Coast Guard in the seas off Kankesanthurai in April this year.

The group included sixteen children.

Later, UNHCR Office in Colombo took them into their custody and sent them to a rented house in Mount Lavinia.
