Professor Colvin Gunarathne who has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Sri Lanka Medical Council says that the Council cannot work beyond the powers vested in it by the Act.

Speaking to our news team, Professor Gunarathne said he aims to carry out his role, without political influence.

However, the GMOA has voiced its stern objections to the new appointment.

Media Spokesperson Dr. Samantha Ananda said an executive committee meeting has been convened to discuss the new appointment with the SLMC.

Meanwhile, the All Ceylon Medical Officers' Association also raised objections to the new appointment.

The National Organizer of the Association Dr. Asanka Wickremesinghe said that it expects to write to the Minister of Health requesting that the appointment of the new chairman be suspended.

The GMOA has already handed over a joint letter with regard to Malabe Private Medical College to the President and the Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, former SLMC chairman Professor Carlo Fonseka has also joined the ongoing Anti-SAITM fast that is being held in front the Fort Railway Station this morning (03).

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry has issued a circular on transfers of doctors.

The GMOA told yesterday that it will launch an island wide strike from next Friday if a solution is not given to the transfer board matter.
