STF uncover gold smuggle

Police Special Task Force succeeded in apprehending two persons including a woman, who had smuggled gold pieces to India to be sold.

They have smuggled gold pieces hiding them inside the rectum.

The STF sleuths had stopped a mini-van on the Katunayake Expressway after they were tipped-off about the modus operandi.

Then the STF had arrested a 29-year-old woman, a 25-year-old person and the driver of the van.

The suspects had initially said that they are visiting India to bring fabric.

However, after a lengthy interrogation, they have accepted of smuggling gold in their rectums.

Later they were taken to Negombo Hospital.

Altogether, gold worth around Rs. 4 million was recovered from the suspects and they had visited Mumbai twice a week.

They have undertaken this illegal act for a long period and they are residents of Grandpass and Kotahena.
