The Minister of Higher Education and Highways Lakshman Kiriella has requested the Government medical faculty students, to suspend boycotting lectures, at least temporarily, as the government has proposed positive solutions with regard to the SAITM problem.

A communiqué issued with the Minister’s signature says that if the solutions the Government has provided are not satisfactory, it is possible to consider lasting solutions after the court verdict is given.

The Minister has said in the communiqué that the Government had temporarily suspended admission of new students to SAITM, as a short-term solution to the problem.

The Minister says that similarly current action is being taken to re-structure SAITM and transform it to a non-profit institution, and as a step in this regard the Neville Fernando Hospital has been brought under the management of the Health Ministry.

The communiqué also mentions that a case is before the Supreme court,  regarding the recognition of the medical degree offered by SAITM.

He says it is the duty of every citizen who respects the law to accept the court's decision.

The communiqué further says that it is hoped that within the next one and a half months, a legal solution would be arrived at.

The Minister also says that it is inappropriate to boycott lectures as the Government has created a suitable environment to resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, the Convener of Inter-university Students' Federation, Lahiru Weerasekera said that the only solution for this issue is to abolish SAITM.
