Cabinet approval for emergency electricity purchase

The Cabinet has approved Rs. 9 billion to purchase 100 MW of electricity to meet the rising demand.

The Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy has submitted a Cabinet paper seeking approval to purchase power from the private sector, as existing generation capacity is inadequate.

The CEB has been purchasing electricity from the private sector for the last 6 months and the relevant company has refused to provide the supply anymore.

The Ministry said that it will call international bids to choose the best possible supplier.

In the wake of this situation, the Deputy Minister, Ajith P. Perera said that the Ministry had sought Cabinet approval for a new mechanism to be adopted to purchase electricity.
