The villagers in the Parakum area in Medirigiriya panicked this morning (04) when a herd of wild elephants encroached their village.

Our correspondent said that there were 11 elephants in that herd.

Because of this, the principal of Medirigiriya Parakum Primary School had decided to suspend studies at the school.

Thereafter, the Wildlife officials from Medirigiriya and Kavdulla moved into to chase away the elephants.

Meanwhile, a wild elephant had destroyed a house in Sadunpura, Dehiattakandiya, early this morning.

The occupants of the house had run away to save their lives.

Our correspondent said there were 4 occupants in the house, including two minors.
