Police Headquarters have instructed all police stations to not produce, contraceptives, used for the prevention of  STDs, as evidence in court.

Police Media spokesperson  SP Ruwan Gunasekera told our news team that this order had been issued by the Division of  Discipline and Conduct.

There is a tendency for police to present contraceptives found in the possession of those arrested,  as proof of their engagement in prostitution.

However, Police Headquarters have stated that since contraceptives have been approved by the Health Department, having them in one’s possession is not a criminal offence.

The Department also pointed out that as a result, such items could not be produced as evidence in courts.
