Police have arrested 26 persons who took part in a demonstration organized by the Joint Opposition against the proposed moves to transfer the management of Mattala Airport to an Indian firm on a long-term lease.

The protestors attempted to march towards the Indian Consulate office in Hambantota and it created a tense situation.

The protestors handed over a letter to the Indian consulate officials and thereafter police used teargas and water cannon to disperse the protestors.

Police said three police personnel sustained injuries during the incident.
