28 persons who were arrested during the protest in Hambantota yesterday (06) have been remanded until the 16th of this month.

They were remanded after being produced before the Hambantota Magistrate Manjula Karunarathna last night.

The protest organized by the Joint Opposition against the long-term leasing of the Mattala International Airport to an Indian firm began at about 10.30 am at the Hambantota Beach Park.

A high ranking police officer in charge of Hambantota said that with the protesters trying to enter the office of the Consulate General of India Hambantota in a riotous manner, police used water cannon and teargas to disperse them.

As the police had previously obtained an interim order from Court against the agitation, several persons including MPs Namal Rajapaksa and D. V. Chanaka were barred from staging the protest in the area under the jurisdiction of the Hambantota court in a manner that would cause disruptions to traffic.

Police gave permission to five of the protesters who came to the office of the Consulate General of India Hambantota to hand over a letter.
