National Police Commission has called for a report from the IGP on an incident where a high ranking police officer was seen assaulting a protestor after he was arrested by police.

The incident occurred during a protest that took place in Hambantota yesterday (06).

Speaking to our news team, NPC's Secretary, Ariyadasa Cooray stated that the commission will hold discussions about the matter on Thursday upon receiving the report.

Meanwhile, Police Spokesperson, SP Ruwan Gunasekara said that an investigation into the assault has been commenced under the supervision of the DIG in charge of Galle.

Police used water cannon and teargas to disperse the protestors who took part in a protest that was staged by the Joint Opposition in Hambantota yesterday against long-term leasing out Mattala International Airport to an Indian firm.

28 individuals including 7 women were arrested in connection with the incident and they were remanded until the 16th of this month.

Meanwhile, Attorney-at-law, Chaminda Sooriyapatabandi representing the suspects in remand custody, yesterday said that the fundamental rights of his clients were violated.

He stated that police have acted disregarding the instructions of the Surgeon of Tissamaharama Hospital.

Meanwhile, Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa visited the suspects who are in remand custody today (07) at the Tangalle Prison.

Subsequently, speaking to media, the MP stated that he will not give up on the struggle against leasing out of Mattala International Airport.
