Bahrain ship detained at Colombo harbour for not paying workers' salaries

A ship owned by a Bahrain company, which had failed to pay the wages of its crew, has been detained at the Colombo harbour.

This is following a court case filed by the workers of the respective ship in Sri Lanka against the non-payment of their salaries.

The respective ship which arrived in the country in June subsequently experienced technical difficulties.

During this period 14 Indian and Myanmar workers had filed a case at the High court.

According to international law, the crew of a particular ship could seek the assistance of the judiciary in the country in which the ship is docked at.

A senior officer of the Colombo harbour noted that as the case is currently being taken up in court, the ship is yet to be released.

It has been reported that the Bahraini company which owns the respective ship named Sanad is yet to take necessary action on paying the wages of its crew.
