An investigation has commenced into an incident where the computer system of Far Eastern International Bank in Taiwan was hacked and its funds being transferred to bank accounts maintained in several countries including Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister of Taiwan, William Lai has issued directives to government officials to review Taiwan’s information security.

It is revealed that the bank’s server, as well as its SWIFT system, have been affected by the hacking.

More than 60 million US dollars have been transferred to other bank accounts maintained in Sri Lanka, Cambodia and the USA through the malware implanted in the computer system of Far Eastern International Bank.

However, a spokesperson for the bank noted that much of the transferred funds have been recovered and the loss incurred by the bank due to the hacking incident is less than 500,000 US dollars.

The Government of Taiwan has informed the bank to submit a comprehensive report about the incident and Taiwanese media reported that the bank may be penalized if any violations of regulations have taken place.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Criminal Investigation Department has commenced an investigation into the remittances received by an account maintained in a private bank in Sri Lanka from Taiwan’s Far Eastern International Bank.

Police stated that an individual who attempted to withdraw funds from the said account was arrested and remanded until next Wednesday (11).

In addition, CCTV footage is being examined to identify another person who had accompanied the suspect.
