Three persons including two Provincial Councillors have been notified that they should appear before Hambantota police today (09) to give a statement in relation to the investigation being held in regard to the commotion that took place during the protest the Joint Opposition organized in Hambantota last Friday (06).

Police media spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said Western Provincial Councillor Upali Kodikara, Southern Provincial Councilor Sampath Athukoraala and “War Heroes for Motherland” convener Rt. Major Ajith Prasanna have been summoned.

In addition MPs Namal Rajapaksa and D. V. Chaanaka have also been notified to appear before Hambantota Police tomorrow (10) to make statements regarding the incident.

Meanwhile, reports say that the Hambantota police have launched an operation in search of other individuals who behaved in a riotous manner, during the protest.

The Joint Opposition organized the protest in Hambantota last Friday to voice their opposition to  Mattala International Airport being handed to an Indian Company on a long-term lease.

While police had also obtained a court order not to hold protests in a manner that would cause a public disturbance, police took action to disperse groups that carried out the agitation disregarding the court order.

So far 28 protestors, who police say behaved in a riotous manner, have been remanded.
