Sri Lanka has decided to impose sanctions against North Korea.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that this decision was reached following a proposal made by the UN Security Council.

The UN Security Council has notified its member countries to impose sanctions on North Korea until it halts its nuclear programmes which are a threat to international peace and security.

Providing fuel services, leasing or renting out ships and crew to North Korea will be entirely prohibited.

North Korean financial institutions will also be barred from establishing branches or related institutions in Sri Lanka.

The Media Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maheshini Colonne stated that those who are found guilty of violating the said regulations may undergo an imprisonment up to 5 years or a penalty not exceeding 1 million rupees or both punishments, as per a high court ruling.

The spokesperson further noted that a suitable officer will be appointed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs with the consultation of the Ministry of Defence, to maintain ties between the two countries after the sanctions are imposed.
