MP Namal Rajapaksa reported to Hambantota Police this morning (09) to give a statement with regards to the public disturbance caused during the protest organized by the Joint Opposition in Hambantota last Friday.

The MP told the media that he requested that the statement be given on an alternative day, as he was required to attend Parliament session today.

The Joint Opposition organized a protest in Hambantota last Friday against the government’s plan to lease out Mattala Airport to an Indian firm.

Police allowed the protestors to hand over a letter to Indian Consulate General’s Office.

However, the demonstration turned violent after police tried to disperse the crowd.

Earlier, Hambantota Magistrate Manjula Karunarathna issued a restraining order preventing MPs Namal Rajapaksa and D.V. Chanaka holding the protest within his jurisdiction.

In spite of the Court order, the protest went ahead and 28 protestors were arrested and remanded.

Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara confirmed that Western Provincial Councillor Upali Kodikara, Southern Provincial Councillor Sampath Athukorala and “War Heroes for Motherland”  convener retired Major Ajith Prasanna have all been summoned by Hambantota Police.

Meanwhile, Hambantota Police has launched a search operation to arrest other individuals who had allegedly caused a disturbance to the public during Friday’s protest.
