Arrested MP Namal sends a message to UN Human Rights Council

MP Namal Rajapaksa who was remanded after being arrested last night (10), has sent a message via Twitter, to the UN Human Rights Council over the arrest of a group of MPs including himself.

MP Namal’s message has reiterated that police have been blocking the voice of the Opposition.

The message has also been communicated to the UN Permanent Representative of the United States.

Meanwhile, the Asian Human Rights Commission stated in a communiqué that police have over-reacted when dispersing the Hambantota protest on last Friday (06).

Police arrested 6 persons including MP Namal Rajapaksa last evening after they reported to Police to give a statement in connection with the protest that was held in front of the Indian Consulate General’s Office in Hambantota.

Later, they were arrested and remanded until 16th of October by the Hambantota Additional District Judge Manjula Karunarathna.

MPs D.V. Chanaka, Prasanna Ranaweera, Provincial Councillors Upali Kodikara, Sampath Athukorala and Retired Major Ajith Prasanna are the other 5 individuals who were remanded.
