Locomotive drivers say their strike will continue

The Locomotive Engineers’ Union launched an unexpected strike last night, alleging breach of procedure in recruiting Assistant train engine drivers, recently.

The union says they will continue their strike until authorities rectify the issued raised by them.

Reports say that Train Guards too joined the strike yesterday in support of the Locomotive Engineers’ union action.

As a result, a number of trips scheduled to commence from Colombo Fort and Maradana were cancelled.

A tense situation prevailed at the Colombo Fort Railway Station last night due to commuters responded in anger as a consequence of the unexpected strike.

The Railway Department said necessary action was taken last night to provide transport for commuters deploying SLTB buses, in view of the last minute cancellations.

Police were called in last night to control the situation that was likely to extend to Maradana Railway station as well.
