The Department of Railways reveals they have incurred a loss of 14 million rupees as a consequence of the strike that was launched on Wednesday night (11).

The Department expects that the loss could rise further.

The trade unions called off the strike temporarily after having discussions with the Secretary to the President Austin Fernando last evening (12).

However, the train services have not yet returned to normal.

During the strike, only 24 trips of 370 scheduled trips had been operated.

The strike was launched following a dispute over the procedures adopted for the recruitment of Assistant Engine Drivers.

The Secretary to the President has promised that a 7 member committee will be appointed to find a solution to the dispute within two weeks.

Meanwhile, our correspondents stated that only a few trains were operated this morning causing inconveniences to commuters especially public servants.
