Southern Expressway users urged to drive carefully

The Road Development Authority urges motorists using the Southern Expressway to maintain a speed of around 60 kmph.

Speaking to our news team, the Director of Expressway Management and Maintenance, S. Opanayake requested motorists to have their headlights switched on at all times when using the expressway.

Meanwhile, our correspondents said that certain low lying areas along the stretch of the Southern Expressway from Kurundugahahathakma to Welipenna have been inundated due to the continuous rainfall.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department said heavy rains could be expected in many parts of the island tonight.

The Department stated that certain areas can experience rainfall between 100 – 150 mm.

Additionally, the landslide warning issued by the National Building Research Organization for Matara, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura and Galle districts will continue to be in effect.

Meanwhile, Police urges motorists using Hatton – Nuwara Eliya and Hatton – Colombo main roads to be vigilant due to the rainfall and mist prevailing in the central hills.

The highest rainfall of 123.8 mm for the past 24 hours was recorded in Nivithigala.

Furthermore, our regional correspondents stated that the water levels in Castlereigh and Maussakale reservoirs are rising whilst the sluice gates in Kukuleganga reservoir remain open.

Speaking to our news team, the Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Center, Pradeep Kodippili stated that there is a risk of the Kelani, Kalu and Nilwala and Gin rivers overflowing.
