The group including MP Namal Rajapaksa who are in remand custody over the recent protest in Hambantota has been taken to Hambantota Courts.

MP Namal and others to be produced before Court

The group who were arrested and remanded for their involvement in the  October 6th protest in Hambantota, MP Namal Rajapaksa MPs D. V. Chanaka, and Prasanna Ranaweera,  Provincial Councillors Upali Kodikara and Sampath Athukorala as well as  “War Heroes for Motherland” convener  Rtd. Major Ajith Prasanna, is scheduled to be produced before the court today.

The group was arrested on 10th this month when they reported to Hambanthota Police Station to make a statement in connection with the protest that was staged in front of the Indian Consular Office in Hambantota on the 6th of October.

The Joint Opposition staged a protest to voice their objections to the long-term leasing of the Matthala Airport to an Indian firm.

So far 40 persons have been arrested and are in remand custody.

Meanwhile, the Joint Opposition staged a silent protest yesterday (15) in Tangalla town against the arrest of the group.

The Joint Opposition has also decided to lodge a verbal and written complaint with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Union regarding the arrest of MP’s.

Joint Opposition MP Dilum Amunugama told our news team that the complaint would be submitted next week.
