There were reports last night that the sky was lightened as a sound similar to a huge explosion was heard in the Southern Province.

Astrophysicists say that they suspect that a meteor explosion may have caused this deep sound and bright light.

Our reporters confirmed that the explosion was heard in many areas of Galle and Matara districts.

Our Galle correspondent, Raveendra Chandralaal said that this loud noise was heard in Neluwa, Tawalama, Habaraaduwa and Ahangama areas.

In Akuressa  Ajith Lankathilaka said that  Matara district residents in Akuressa, Pitabaddara, Deniyaya and  Weligama also clearly heard the sound.

However, Disaster Management Centre, Assistant director, Pradeep Kodippili said that an investigation would be carried out with the relevant technical institutions to confirm their suspicions.

The incident has occurred at around 8.30 pm.a

Meanwhile, Prof. Chandana Jayaratne says it is certain that the loud explosion and bright light reportedly seen in Southern skies last night was a meteor explosion.
