Say sand mining destroys Negombo coast….

The Department of Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resource Management has requested a report from the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development on the current situation of the sea area in Negombo from where sand is extracted for the reclamation of the Port City land.

Speaking to our news team, the Director General of the Department of Coastal Conservation, Prabath Chandrakeerthi said that the report was called following a complaint made by a group of fishermen in Negombo.

The fishermen have complained that sand extraction takes place beyond the designated area. The designated area is 7 km away from the coast.

However, the fishermen say the dredgers are extracting sand much closer to the coast.

A total of around 70 million cubic meters of sand is estimated to have required for the Port City project while only 30 million cubic meters have been utilized thus far for the reclamation activities.
