The Minister of Higher Education, Lakshman Kiriella says that the Government’s final decision on the Malabe Private Medical College will be announced on Friday (27).

Speaking to our news team, Minister Kiriella said that the SAITM will not be abolished as part of the final decision.

Meanwhile, Registrar of the Sri Lanka Medical Council, Dr. Terrance Gamini de Silva said that the SLMC will meet today (25) to further discuss the minimum standards required to establish a new medical college.

The meeting has been convened by the SLMC President Prof. Colvin Gooneratne to inform the members on a recent discussion he had with President Maithripala Sirisena on the SAITM issue.

Meanwhile, the SLMC's Committee on Minimum Standards met last week (17) to discuss recommendations of the Attorney General on the minimum standards of medical education.

During that meeting, certain recommendations of the AG were accepted by that Committee.

It will be further discussed during today's meeting.
